Choosing the right size of cycling shoes

In the previous article about cycling shoes, we looked at how to categorize them and which segments we should explore to meet our needs. On the following page, we’ll help you choose the right size.

It’s important to mention that this article can only specify the correct size in terms of length to a certain extent. However, don't forget that many other factors contribute to comfort – seam placement, instep height, the shape of the insole combined with the arch of your foot, foot width, and more. None of these aspects can be categorized in a table, and you can only be completely sure if you try the shoes on.

You've probably experienced that shoes from different manufacturers can vary by more than a full size. It’s no different with cycling shoes. The most reliable and universal international measurement is the Japanese one, which is stated in millimeters and increases in increments of five. For example, the label JAP 27.5 means the insole is approximately 275 mm long. This size can be easily measured at home on a suitable shoe, and then you can choose the most appropriate size using the attached charts.

Shimano – With Shimano, shoes almost always fit one size larger than your standard clothing size. It often happens that a customer with size EUR 42.5 actually needs a Shimano shoe in EUR 44. A very limited number of models are available in a WIDE version, which is suitable for wider feet. Shimano does not offer half sizes.

NORTHWAVE – Sizes correspond to standard clothing sizes, and the shoes are sufficiently wide. You can check the fit by measuring the insole length in CM.

Mavic – Uses an unconventional sizing system in third sizes. It’s usually necessary to choose a slightly larger size – the best way to check is using the first column, which lists foot length in MM.

Giro – The shoes match standard clothing sizes. Sometimes a "slightly larger" size is needed. Thanks to the availability of half sizes, this can be solved by choosing half a size up.

Five Ten – The shoes match standard clothing sizes.

Force – The shoes match standard clothing sizes. Check using the row with measurements in centimeters.
