How to choose a kids bike

Choosing a kids bike doesn't always have to be a gamble on whether you chose the right size or not. Below you will find the recommended age for each size and basic information on what you can expect from the bike.

12” kids bikes and balance bikes are suitable for children aged 1.5 to 3 years. They are generally recommended for children between 80 and 100 cm tall. For the youngest cyclists, we recommend starting with a balance bike, which allows the child to focus on balance and coordination without worrying about pedaling. This makes the transition to pedal bikes much easier, and often the child can skip training wheels altogether. Models range from basic to more advanced versions with brakes. It’s important to adjust the saddle height properly so that the child feels stable and safe, without sitting unnecessarily low.

14” kids bikes are typically used by children around 3 years old, and are suitable for heights between 90 and 105 cm. Once a less common size, 14” bikes are now more widely offered than 12” models. They are ideal as a child's first pedal bike. These bikes may have a coaster brake (braking by pedaling backward) or a freewheel system with standard hand brakes. The coaster brake offers simpler stopping for beginners, but comes with added weight and harder starts. Freewheel systems are lighter and increasingly common. Drive mechanisms include traditional chains or belt drives, which are low-maintenance and cleaner. Some bikes may come with optional training wheels depending on the child’s skill level.

16” kids bikes are suited for kids aged 4 to 5 years and capable of longer rides. Ideal height is 100 to 115 cm. Larger wheels improve momentum, and drivetrains allow for higher speeds. Bikes are still designed for a low center of gravity for stability. Like 14” bikes, they come with either coaster brakes or freewheels, and either chain or belt drive. Most are single-speed, though some brands offer automatic hub gears at this size.

20” kids bikes are designed for children aged 5 to 8 years, with heights ranging from 110 to 130 cm. These bikes are closer in design to adult bikes and are suitable for forest paths and unpaved roads. When choosing a 20” bike, consider where the child will ride. Rigid forks and basic gearing are great for light, flat terrain. For more adventure, choose models with multiple gears, a suspension fork, and wider tires—possibly even disc brakes.

24” kids bikes are best for kids aged 8 to around 12 years and between 120 and 145 cm tall. These bikes are perfect for longer family rides and behave much like adult bikes. They come in various styles, from lightweight urban bikes to full-suspension models for young riders. Gear shifting may be either twist grip or standard lever-based systems.

26” and 27.5” junior bikes are suitable for children and teens aged 8 to 15 years with heights between 135 and 170 cm. These are essentially adult bikes with smaller frames. Most manufacturers offer multiple frame sizes at these wheel diameters, so it’s important to focus on frame size, not just wheel size. Bikes in this range are typically available in XS and S sizes, and both front suspension and full-suspension models are common.

Other criteria for choosing a children's bike

You've chosen the right size, but why do bike prices vary so much? The answer lies in components and materials. Just like adult bikes, children's bikes come in a wide range of build quality. Weight is especially critical for smaller children, and it greatly affects the final price.

The era of heavy steel-framed bikes is over. Lightweight children's bikes are booming, and brands are pushing to use high-quality components that reduce weight. A lighter bike is easier for children to handle and more enjoyable to ride. Lightweight bikes in 14” and 16” sizes can weigh around 6 kg or less. For 20” bikes, a weight of around 8 kg is considered light.

If you add a suspension fork, multiple gears, and wider tires, expect a bit more weight—but also greater off-road capability. Pricier bikes also include higher-end components, making shifting easier and more precise. These bikes last longer and can be passed down. And the lighter the bike, the happier not just the child—but the parent too. After all, you’ll likely end up carrying or pushing it at some point :)
