How to choose a bike for adults

The bicycle market is more than diverse, so in this article we'll give you advice on the basic categories of bicycles.

The bicycle market is extremely diverse, so we’ve prepared a guide for you on the basic categories of bicycles.

Road Bikes

These bikes are designed to offer the best balance between weight and frame stiffness for optimal responsiveness to changes in speed. As the name suggests, road bikes are meant for use on paved roads. The drivetrains on this type are designed for fast riding, but also perform well on steep climbs. The tires are usually available in widths of 700x23-30 to maximize speed.

Trekking Bikes

This bike category is best suited for cycle paths, paved field roads, and hardened forest trails. The geometry of a trekking bike is always designed for the needs of recreational cyclists, ensuring a comfortable position even on longer rides. The gearing is versatile for all terrain profiles—allowing you to climb hills with ease while also being sufficient for faster flat rides, such as along rivers.

Gravel Bikes

A new and very popular bike category—known as a "gravel bike". Essentially a cyclocross bike with more relaxed geometry. The main advantage of gravel bikes is their comfort and stability even on rougher surfaces. The front and rear forks offer wider clearances, allowing the bike to be equipped with wider tires, making it suitable for more demanding terrain. Most users treat the gravel bike as a universal option: with narrow, smooth tires for fast road riding, or wider, knobby tires for off-road and mixed terrain.

Mountain Bikes

This most commonly encountered category of bicycles offers a wide range of options. Mountain bikes are comfortable and feature geometry tailored for smooth off-road handling. The two basic subcategories are hardtail and full-suspension bikes.

Hardtail (Front Suspension)

This mountain bike class is designed for riding on unpaved paths. Within this subcategory, you’ll find both recreational and racing models. The drivetrains are tuned for higher cadence pedaling, improving balance and fluidity in technical terrain. A wide range of tires is available for mountain bikes, which can greatly influence the ride quality. Narrower tires with a smoother tread allow the bike to be used for faster and more comfortable riding off-trail as well.

Full-Suspension Mountain Bikes

In this category, it’s important to consider how and where the bike will be used. Bikes with 100 mm of suspension travel are suited for lighter terrain. Bikes with 150–180 mm of travel are typically classified as enduro bikes—designed for aggressive riding, occasional jumps, and still capable of climbing. Around 200 mm of travel is typical for downhill bikes, built primarily for fast and technical descents with jumps.

And if you're unsure about choosing the right frame size, we've prepared a frame size chart for different bicycle brands. Of course, we’re always happy to help—don’t hesitate to contact us.
