Headsets fall into several categories (see below). There are external cup threadless headsets, which must be pressed into the frame. Another commonly used type is the zero-stack semi-integrated threadless headset, which also must be pressed into the frame, but unlike external cups, the cups sit flush with the headtube. Drop-in headsets have the bearing seats molded or machined directly into the frame where the cartridge bearings sit. The oldest and now uncommon type is the threaded headset.
