Rear shocks not only ensure riding comfort, but also significantly affects the the bike's ability to track rough terrain. They ultimately save you as a rider. Rear shocks are suspended by either a coil spring, predominantly used on downhill and some enduro bikes, or an air spring,  used on most other mountain bikes.
