DT Swiss G 1800 SPLINE 700C – gravel wheels built for miles, not weight claims

The G 1800 SPLINE is DT Swiss’s entry-level aluminum wheelset developed specifically for gravel and bikepacking. It’s not a lightweight road wheel with a different label — both the rim and the build are designed for higher system weight, bags, and long stretches of gravel, where composure matters more than the last grams saved. If you’re looking for wheels that can get through a full season without needing truing, this is a sensible choice.

Rim

The aluminum rim is 25 mm deep with a 24 mm internal width (28 mm external) — today’s gravel standard. You can confidently run tires from 35 mm up to a voluminous 50 mm, including 700×45C and 50C, which are ideal for fast bikepacking and rougher gravel. The profile is hooked, so you don’t have to stick to a narrow list of approved tires like with hookless rims, and it’s Tubeless Ready in the DT Swiss TC design. Tubeless tape (27 mm) and aluminum valves are included in the box. Presta valve.

A strong rim joint and a solid spoke build push the maximum system weight to 130 kg — rider, bike, and bags combined. That’s above average at this price point and the main reason the G 1800s show up so often on bikepacking setups.

Hubs and Ratchet LN 18

DT Swiss 370 series hubs with the Ratchet LN 18 mechanism. The toothed ring engages with all 18 teeth at once, meaning the load isn’t carried by two or three pawls, but distributed around the entire circumference. In practice: the mechanism is more durable when climbing hard out of the saddle, handles dirt better, and you can service it even on the road — it comes apart by hand, without a special tool.

Freehub comes in Shimano HG (Road 11/12sp, forged ASF11) — compatible with Shimano 11-speed and 12-speed road and gravel cassettes (105, GRX, Ultegra, Dura-Ace). 12 mm thru-axle (100/142 mm), disc mounts in Center Lock.

If you later want to increase engagement, the whole platform can be upgraded to Ratchet EXP — it’s a matter of swapping two parts, not buying new wheels.

Spokes

DT aero comp® wide straightpull spokes in a 2× lacing pattern and a 1:1 ratio on both sides. The aero spoke profile keeps the wheel stiff under side loads and under the torque from disc braking. DT ProLock Squorx ProHead aluminum nipples have a locking feature to prevent loosening — you’ll notice it after the first truly rough kilometers.
