Scandi Grind
A specific type of blade sharpening that features a single wide bevel running from the back of the blade to the edge. Unlike other types of grinds, it does not have a secondary bevel, simplifying its sharpening and maintenance. This grind creates a sharp and robust edge, which is ideal for woodworking tasks like carving, bushcraft or fire starting, due to its durability and cutting power. This grind has its roots in Scandinavia, where it was widely used for traditional knives, hence its name.

The Scandi grind has a wedge shape, which makes cutting fibrous materials like wood easier. Its simplicity also allows for easy maintenance directly in the field, as it can be simply sharpened. It is most commonly found on outdoor knives, bushcraft, and carving knives. On the other hand, this grind is not ideal for tasks that require fine or precise cuts, such as food preparation, because the blade is often too thick for such tasks.

Knife Sharpening

1. Tool preparation: Use a sharpening stone (preferably with both coarse and fine surface) or a diamond sharpener. For basic sharpening, it's recommended to use the coarse stone and for edge refinement, a fine stone.
2. Setting the angle: The Scandi grind has a flat bevel that can easily be laid on the stone. Hold the knife so that the entire grind surface touches the stone. The knife should be aligned with the grind, ensuring you're sharpening at the correct angle (usually about 22 degrees).
3. Stroke away from the edge: Pull the knife away from the edge. Start each stroke from the base of the blade (near the handle) and smoothly proceed to the tip. Repeat this motion evenly on both sides of the blade.
4. Change direction: After several strokes on one side, flip the blade and repeat on the other side to ensure the grind is even.
5. Use of a finer stone: Once the desired sharpness is achieved with the coarse stone, move to a finer stone or diamond sharpener to refine the edge and remove any burrs.
6. Finishing and testing: Once sharpening is complete, wipe the knife and test its sharpness. You can perform a paper or rope test—a sharp knife should cut smoothly without issue.
