The blade with a Scandi grind is made from Japanese knife steel, 3.0 mm carbon steel, which is hardened to 58–60 HRC and has a protective layer applied by electrophoretic deposition that protects against corrosion.

Scandi grind
A specific type of blade grinding, characterized by a single wide bevel running from the spine of the blade to the edge. Unlike other types of grinds, it has no secondary bevel, simplifying sharpening and maintenance. This grind creates a sharp and robust edge, making it ideal for woodworking tasks, like carving, bushcraft, or fire starting, due to its durability and cutting strength. This grind originates from Scandinavia where it was widely used for traditional knives, hence the name.

The Scandi grind has a wedge shape, which facilitates cutting fibrous materials such as wood. Its simplicity also allows for easy maintenance directly in the field as it is easy to sharpen. It is most commonly found on knives for outdoor use, bushcraft, and carving. On the other hand, this grind is not ideal for tasks requiring fine or precise cuts, such as food preparation, as the blade is often too thick for such tasks.

Knife Sharpening

1. Tool Preparation: Use a sharpening stone (preferably with both a coarse and fine surface) or a diamond sharpener. For basic sharpening, it's recommended to use a coarser stone, and for refining the edge, a finer stone.
2. Setting the angle: The Scandi grind has a flat bevel which can be easily laid on the stone. Hold the knife so the entire bevel surface touches the stone. The knife should be level with the grind, ensuring you are sharpening at the correct angle (usually around 22 degrees).
3. Pull away from the edge: Pull the knife away from the edge. Start each stroke from the heel of the blade (near the handle) and smoothly continue to the tip. Repeat this motion evenly on both sides of the blade.
4. Change direction: After several strokes on one side, flip the blade and repeat on the other side for an even grind.
5. Use of finer stone: Once you achieve the desired sharpness with the coarser stone, switch to a finer stone or diamond sharpener to refine the edge and remove any burrs.
6. Finishing and testing: After sharpening, wipe the knife and test its sharpness. You can use a paper or rope test – a sharp knife should cut smoothly without problems.
