Does the rear end of the frame have to be Boost, i.e. 12/148, in order to use this 12s SLX cassette, or can this 12s cassette also be used on a frame with a 12/142 thru-axle?

If you can swap the standard freehub body for a Microspline one, then it should not be a problem.

 no, you can fit a 12-speed cassette on a non-Boost frame; the main thing is that the chainline is set correctly. For example, the Sram NX groupset is made in both the standard and Boost version.

 theoretically, the cassette could be used even on non-Boost frames. It is important that the hub is fitted with a Shimano Microspline freehub body, on which this cassette can be used. You cannot fit the cassette on a standard Shimano freehub body.

The chain should work as an 11-speed one, so at least as a temporary solution to get you home (if it’s in good condition) you can keep it.
